Medical Spanish Immersion

Spanish by Native has specifically developed this language-learning course to help medical providers. This course will help you facilitate communication and foster relationships amongst Spanish-speaking patients. It is a course designed for pre-med, nursing students, medical students, doctors, nurses and their assistants, or anyone in the medical profession with a desire or need to learn Spanish.
Course Description
Cultural knowledge is extremely important when working with diverse communities. This course offers students the opportunity not only to learn the Spanish language, but teaches students how to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients.
This course gives medical Providers insight into the Spanish language. You will gain cultural knowledge of the Hispanic population in Philadelphia through the use of specialized course materials and techniques. The pace of the course will depend on your level of proficiency and personal or institutional goals established during registration.
The Medical Spanish Immersion course is more than a Spanish language program; it is a course aimed at reducing the cultural and linguistic barriers between healthcare professionals and Spanish-speaking patients.
Course Activities
The goal of learning a language is simply to communicate and does not mean the memorization of a list of medical terms in a foreign language. The study and understanding of grammar is important for the application of vocabulary (medical terminology) and improves your effectiveness and ability to communication in the Spanish language.
Having an understanding of the structure of the language will enable you to express yourself more clearly. It will help you to develop stronger relationships with your Spanish-speaking patients. This Medical Spanish Immersion course combines language learning techniques with medical terminology to teach you in a more natural and effective way.
Spanish by Native understands that each student has specific needs and goals with different ways of learning. That’s why we are flexible. We can customize this course to meet the student’s needs and interests. The course can be modified or personalized without losing its effectiveness in helping the Provider communicate with native Spanish-speakers.
Lesson Plans
Spanish by Native provides a lesson plan in advance; the material in the lesson specifically targets the medical profession.
Speaking Assignments
Students will participate in individual or in group discussions and debates related to the topics in the lessons. Discussions may also focus on cross-cultural differences as they relate to the course content.
Reading Assignments
Trends and issues will be analyzed for their cultural as well as social or medical significance. Students might role-play common situations for classmates to analyze. Current news articles may be used to generate conversation. Every reading has the following elements: comprehension, application, vocabulary, and a topic for further discussion.
Medical Terminology
Medical terminology is not taught mechanically, but in a conversational and engaging setting. Practical examples will be provided.
Conversation
This format will include question and answer sessions to provide interactivity between students and instructor.
Cultural Immersion
Cultural readings are assigned for discussions and understanding the cultural background of perspective patients.
Videos & Music
Suggested topics will be provided for cultural significance and discussion.
Course Materials
A textbook may be assigned for this course to go along with the lesson plan.
Student Evaluation
Learning a language is a process that requires an active participation of the learner. In every class the student dynamically participates. This course is designed to provide an enjoyable and satisfying experience.
You will be given feedback on the degree to which your learning outcomes are achieved. A variety of methods may be used such as class participation, homework assignments, etc.
