De – which means from/of or about/by in Spanish is used for relationships, periods of time, dates, possessions, to indicate origin, the starting point of an activity, statements of measures and quantities, to specify content matter, measures, etc.
As you already know, compound prepositions consist of more than one word with the preposition. Below are some examples:

o Cerca de
o Es una botella de vino.
o La clase es de las 5 a las 7pm.
o La reunión es el 5 de mayo.
o El libro es de Pedro.
o Yo soy de El Salvador.
o La clase inicia a las 5 de la tarde.
